Bernhard Liebetanz was born on 31 July 1894 in Schwersen and was a serving member of the Kriegsmarine during World War II and managed to attain the rank of Konteradmiral and went on to command the following M134, Bremse and Emden.

Bernhard Liebetanz joined Kaiserliche Marine as a Seekadett on 1 April 1913 and went to the naval school in Mürwik and continued his training on board heavy cruiser Vineta.

Bernhard Liebetanz was given the command of the fleet tender M134 on 1 October 1921 and remained in command until 30 January 1922 he was then transferred to the artillery training ship Bremse on 27 March 1933 until 26 September 1934 he was then again transferred to the light cruiser Emden on 20 June 1937 until 30 July 1937.
