Harald Netzbandt was born on 3 August 1892 in Berlin, Germany and was a serving member of the Kriegsmarine during World War II and managed to attain the rank of Kapitän zur See and went on to command the following Gneisenau.

Harald Netzbandt joined Kaiserliche Marine as a Seekadett on 1 April 1912 and went to the naval school in Mürwik and continued his training on board heavy cruiser Victoria Louise during this time, he was promoted to the rank of Fähnrich zur See.

Harald Netzbandt was given the command of the torpedo boat T149 on 1 May 1923 and remained in command until 15 September 1924. And later went on to command the battleship Gneisenau from 25 November 1939 until 20 August 1940.
