Moritx von Auffenberg was born at Troppau, in Austrian Silesia, May 22, 1852. Moritx von Auffenberg was educated at Hamburg and Vienna and entered the Austrian Army in 1871. Moritx von Auffenberg became Minister of war for Austria-Hungary in 1911.

When the Great War broke out Moritx von Auffenberg was commander-in-chief of the Austrian 2nd army, which operated in East Galicia, August-September 1914. Moritx von Auffenberg was defeated in the battles for Lemberg and was soon replaced by von Boehm-Ermolli.
