Viktor Graf Dankl von Krasnik was born on 18 September 1854 in Udine, Italy, and entered the Austrian army as a lieutenant of cavalry in 1874. Major the general staff in 1891 and one of the sub-chiefs of the staff in 1899, Victor Dankl became general of cavalry in 1912.

On the outbreak of the Great War Victor Dankl was placed in command of the Austrian 1st Army which invaded south-east Poland in August 1914 and was heavily defeated in the Rava Russka battles.

In 1915 Victor Dankl was transferred to the Italian front and till the defeat of Austria by Italy in October 1918 Victor Dankl was in command of Austrian troops in Northern Italy.
