Werner Stichling was born on 26 November 1895 in Gotha, Germany and was a serving member of the Kriegsmarine during World War II and managed to attain the rank of Konteradmiral and went on to command the following Leipzig.

Werner Stichling joined Kaiserliche Marine as a Seekadett on 1 April 1914 and attended basic naval training and continued his training on board heavy cruiser Victoria Louise.

Werner Stichling was given the command of the light cruiser Leipzig on 1 December 1940 and remained in command until 30 August 1942.
